Warriors Owner Deliberates on the GOAT Point Guard: Stephen Curry or Magic Johnson?

Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob has become the latest to chime in on the hottest debate in the NBA world in recent weeks. Lacob was on The TK Show recently, where he was asked whether Stephen Curry or Magic Johnson is the greatest point guard ever.

“I think the truth is they are two of the greatest, if not the two greatest, and that’s a big thing,” Lacob said. “Magic Johnson, I don’t think there’ll ever be anybody quite like him … 6-9 point guard. … Steph Curry, on the other hand, revolutionized the game completely with the long shots.”

Lacob went on to mention that Curry being a great human being and face of the franchise has to be added to the equation.

“He’s (Curry) also a great team leader,” Lacob continued. “Both of them were good team leaders, but Steph, this is what really sets him apart in my mind. He’s such an incredible human being, such a great face for our organization overall. We’re all so proud to have him be in that role. … He’s historically great in that regard, so you have to include that when you’re analyzing these two. They’re both great.”

Lacob then joked that Curry and Magic will have the same number of titles after this upcoming season.

“I don’t know how you can make a choice,” Lacob added. “What, did Magic win five titles, I think? And Steph has four, we’re going to get the fifth this year. And if not this year, next. … Anyone should be lucky to have either of them.”

Lacob went with the non-controversial answer here. It is a fair way to look at it, though. Any team would be lucky to have one of the two, and the Warriors have reaped the benefits of having Curry around by winning four NBA championships.

Michael Jordan Had Some Strong Views On This Topic
While there were a fair few in the media who disagreed with Curry, Stephen A. Smith felt he had a real claim to be the greatest point guard. Smith’s views elicited a strong response from none other than Michael Jordan,

Smith revealed Jordan texted him to state that Magic is greater than Curry. Jordan acknowledged that Curry is the greatest shooter ever, but thinks Johnson is easily the best point guard of all time.

Jordan, of course, faced off against Magic on numerous occasions, including in the 1991 NBA Finals, and has a tremendous amount of respect for the Lakers icon.

Curry Or Magic?
Just who is greater between Curry and Magic? Let’s take a look.

Stephen Curry’s career stats: 24.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game

Johnson just has the better resume when you compare them and to be fair to Curry, he did acknowledge that when he made that remark. We also did a full comparison between Magic and Curry, with the former coming out on top.

Steph still has time to add to his resume, though, as he is far from being done just yet and could very well hold that title when he retires.
