WCW cemented its status as one of the greatest promotions from the 80s to the late 90s. In fact, it was the second-biggest promotion in the American professional wrestling scene. WCW even surpassed Vince McMahon‘s company on several occasions. Thanks to its brilliant storytelling and talented roster. It had established legends like Scott Hall and Hulk Hogan while also featuring upcoming superstars like Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero. However, the promotion succumbed to poor management decisions.
Eventually, the storied wrestling promotion met its demise when Vince McMahon bought the promotion and ran it to the ground. Multiple media projects have recorded the history of this company over the years, most of them coming from WWE Studios.
However, a company unrelated to the current owner of the WCW library has begun production on a new documentary centered on Ted Turner’s former venture. Seven Bucks Productions and Vice Studios will premiere ‘Who Killed WCW?’, a new series in a documentary format.
The Rock just announced its premiere tonight. So will he be a part of it? Well, let’s find out.
The Rock assumes an unusual role in the new series revolving around WCW
Well, fans who believed that The Rock would act in the documentary can expect disappointment. The Brahma Bull will not appear on screen. His role amounted to something even greater. He produced the show. Under the supervision of The Rock and Dany Garcia, this new production documents the rise and fall of World Championship Wrestling.
The show will feature interviews with wrestlers and backstage workers who will tell never-before-seen stories about the downfall of Ted Turner’s company. In the words of The Rock, it answers a personal question he always had in mind: “To me, it was never a question of WHO killed WCW, but rather WHAT killed WCW.”
Seven Bucks Productions has previously worked with VICE TV to produce Tales from the Territories. A documentary series focused on the territorial stage of American professional wrestling, targeting various storylines from various companies around the country in the pre-Rock and Wrestling Connection era.
VICE TV had garnered praise in the past for its documentaries dedicated to the world of professional wrestling. The TV channel has hosted projects such as Dark Side of the Ring, The Nine Lives of Vince McMahon, and Tales from the Territories. The latter was the first production between VICE and Seven Bucks. The first episode of ‘Who Killed WCW?’ will premiere on Tuesday, June 4, on VICE TV. The production will be helmed by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Brian Gewirtz. Along with Vice Studios employees Lee Hoffman, Evan Husney, and Jason Eisener. The total number of episodes has not been confirmed. Nevertheless, we can expect a scintillating series that portrays the good, the bad, and the ugly of the WCW during its heyday.
