“It damn near makes up for that MidA** movie”: Black Adam Was Many Things But the $393M Dwayne Johnson Movie Did One Thing So Perfectly Even James Gunn’s DCU May Never Hit That Benchmark

Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam ended up becoming the laughingstock of the DC Extended Universe after it critically and commercially failed to perform at the box office in 2022. Despite its numerous criticisms, there’s one thing fans give it credit for – the costumes.

James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie is currently getting so much flak after behind-the-scenes photos leaked online and showed unimpressive wardrobes for Hawkgirl and Green Lantern. Is the highly anticipated project going to disappoint fans in the costume department?

Fans Think Black Adam’s Costumes Are Far Superior To DCU’s Suits

A fan from Twitter shared a set of photos from Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam showing the various fantastic outfits of its characters.

The actor previously commended his team of costume designers in a post after toiling hard to bring the most authentic and striking character outfits to life. “Authenticity and accuracy for costumes were so important to us,” The Rock said, before adding, “Our ‘best in the biz’ costume designers (Kurt, Bart & team) took a lot of pride in taking it to the next level.”

The viral fan post was in response to the leaked images of Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern. Fans did not like the costumes as they looked too generic and low-effort. Netizens could not help but compare it with that of DCEU. Here’s what people think of this comparison:

It remains unknown if these suits were just prototypes, but James Gunn and his team could definitely do better in terms of the superhero fits. Even though Black Adam failed to flesh out its narrative, it did not stint on the budget for costumes.

It also helped that the outfits in Black Adam don’t even need the help of CGI to look fantastic. It’s only sad that the movie had so much potential and the collective hate towards it has completely dragged it through the depths of no redemption.

Will Black Adam Join The DCU?

After James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the DC Universe, things changed at the headquarters and a new slate of projects called Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters was announced. Unfortunately, Black Adam was nowhere to be found on the list.

Still, The Rock assured fans that even though Teth-Adam won’t get a solo movie in the DCU, he and Gunn have spoken about a possible collaboration:

However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.

The future of Black Adam remains vague at this point, and it seems Johnson is busy with his other projects at the moment. With the numbers it churned during its theatrical run, Black Adam going solo flight again may not be the best idea after all.

Black Adam is available to watch on Netflix.
