The iconic movie hero is still in the game!
Being presumably the most recognized action star of the 21st century, Jason Statham made his name known around the world with such staples of the genre, as Crank (2006), The Mechanic (2011), Wrath of Man (2021) and, of course, the Fast & Furious franchise.
Disappointingly, his last movie rated 70% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes was the 2015 hit Spy. Since then, Statham starred only in critically panned or even commercially failed flicks, however, this year Amazon released a movie that changed that trend
The plot revolves around Statham’s Adam Clay, a former secret agent who is enraged by the suicide of his landlady, caused by the loss of her charity’s funds to a phishing scam.
Urging for revenge, Adam sets out a campaign against those responsible for that scam, and this operation promises to take on national stakes, as the guilty ones acknowledge he was a member of a powerful clandestine organization.
This synopsis, offering another story of a man seeking justice, is really reminiscent of Keanu Reeves ’ John Wick or even Uma Thurman’s Kill Bill. Besides, it’s obvious that you’ll like it if you’re a fan of Statham’s action roller coasters, like The Expendables franchise.
However, it appears to be not a simple action-packed calque of John Wick, but a movie that also blends humor and exploration of the theme of secret societies. That is why you’ll enjoy it if you liked Colin Firth ’s Kingsman and Natalie Portman ’s V for Vendetta.
Just like Kingsman, it’s not afraid to be funny and to make even the most brutal hero deliver high-class jokes on his way towards revenge. The film’s humor is what really makes it stand out among other Statham movies of the past few years and takes us back to the year of 2000, when the actor starred in Guy Ritchie ’s crime comedy Snatch.
Titled The Beekeeper, the 2024 flick is definitely a must-watch for the fans of the action star, who “can do comedy too,” as voiced by Redditor @NormanBates2023.
Despite 5 months having passed since its release, it’s now holding the fifth place in Prime’s Top 10.
“The ONLY flaw is that Statham does not say “buzz off” after killing a guy,” jokes @Potential_Bill2083.
You can check out how many bees the actor really keeps while bringing justice on screen, as The Beekeeper is available for streaming on Prime.
