Simone Biles becomes the first-ever gymnast to clinch a 2nd Olympic all-around title. She achieved this feat previously in the 2016 Rio Olympics when she was just 19. Biles’ teammate Suni Lee also ended up with a Bronze medal. For the historic event, the Olympic rookie, Stephen Curry, and his Team USA teammates were spotted at the gymnastics event. Despite a performance that might have left many speechless, Curry had quite a few words to expound on what he had witnessed.
“To see that athleticism, the clutchness of Simone and Suni in that moment, knowing what they had to do and going out and doing it was absolutely incredible. They are ridiculous to watch. To see that athleticism, it’s insane.” Stephen Curry spoke to Tim Reynolds after the event. Lee scored a total of 56.465. It was 2.666 behind Biles and 1.199 behind the silver medalist, Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade.
Lee scored 13.933 in the vault, 14.866 in the uneven bars, 14.000 in the balance Beam, and 13.666 in the floor routine. The start from the 21-year-old was solid however, she was placed 7th after the vault event. Crawling her way back up, she needed a score of 13.535 to beat Italy’s Alice D’Amato, which she eventually did. On the contrary, Stephen Curry has failed to light the court, as he is accustomed to.
“You’re always annoyed, for sure, you always want to make shots,” Stephen Curry admitted to USA Today’s Lindsay Schnell after another underwhelming shooting in his Olympic appearance. Let’s deep dive into his performance against South Sudan.
Stephen Curry and his struggles with Olympic Basketball
Making back-to-back Olympic appearances, and scoring 11 points against Serbia in the opener, nobody expected Stephen Curry to only score 3 points. The Warriors star could only manage 1 point at the end of the first half and ended the night 1-of-9 from the field. However, the most shocking stat came in when the Golden Boy missed all six of his three-point attempts.
His lone field goal came deep into the 4th quarter. Even the South Sudan coach was impressed by his team for keeping Curry quiet. “I mean, we kept Steph Curry to three points. Jayson Tatum to four points. Those are the best players in the NBA. But it still wasn’t enough.”
In the first game, Baby-Faced Assassin scored 11 points with 42.8% shooting from the 3-point zone as he added 4 from 8 for the field goals. Previously, Curry had admitted to not being used to the rules of Olympic Basketball. However, nobody expected him to struggle this much. But knowing Curry, with a couple of three-pointers, he can not only get his confidence back but can provide the team with an unassailable lead.
