In the past few years, Disney projects haven’t had the best box-office performances. In these difficult times, many fans have turned to the CEO of the company, Bob Iger, seeking answers about why one of the biggest companies of all time is having such a grand, yet difficult-to-watch, fall from grace.
Their wishes seem to have come true, as the executive has recently spoken about the company’s new strategies. He revealed that they would be taking an approach that did not favor sequels. This could be very bad news for Dwayne Johnson’s Moana.
Bob Iger Reveals Disney’s New Strategy
Bob Iger was recently on a conference call with analysts, via Deadline, where he talked about what Disney will be doing in the near future to fix its mistakes. He specifically talked about one of the biggest criticisms it has been getting from all sides; its abundance of content and the lack of quality.
Iger said he was “working hard with the studio to reduce output and focus more on quality,”
The CEO of the company mentioned that he was looking forward to a more ‘quality’ focused approach when it comes to the projects they take on. While many would assume he was only talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe in this context, it would seem another sub-category was also mentioned.
“We had gone through a period where our original films in animation were dominating. We are now swinging back a bit to lean on sequels,” said Bob Iger.
Iger talked about the company’s animated films; which have not been doing very well in the past couple of years. He revealed that although sequels are always very profitable, current reports show original animated projects getting more attention. With these facts in hand, he revealed that they would try to balance both kinds of projects. However, the focus will currently stay on making new things.
Bad News For Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne Johnson’s Moana has become one of the most well-known films in recent years. With this in mind, it is not surprising that there are more parts on the way. However, Bob Iger’s recent announcement may make it more difficult. While it was officially announced that the film would be getting a second part, many were expecting it to get more because of its success.
The new strategy that Disney is adopting can make the possibility of a trilogy quite difficult. While the second film is set to release on November 27, 2024, a third part might have to go through some trials to be greenlit.
Despite this, the 2016 film was one of the most profitable films in recent years for the company. With this in mind, there might still be a chance for it to prove itself to be an assist.
