After longtime general manager Bob Myers stepped down and the team re-signed veteran forward Draymond Green to a long-term deal, the Golden State Warriors made an unexpected move to trade guard Jordan Poole to the Washington Wizards in exchange for future Hall-of-Famer Chris Paul.
With there being no love lost between Paul and Stephen Curry, as well as Paul and Klay Thompson, this was an interesting and head-scratching move, to say the least, by the storied franchise.
Initially, it seemed like a smart move to get off Poole’s large contract because he was no longer getting along with Green and appeared to take a step back last season with some questionable shot-taking, but getting Paul in return is a bit perplexing.
If Paul is willing to pick up the pace and play a supporting role, then this could be a brilliant move by the Warriors, as it could make the team that much more dynamic.
However, it could be a disaster if Paul and the Warriors stars can’t get along, and he clearly doesn’t fit in the system.
Former Warriors center DeMarcus Cousins admits he was confused by the move to bring in Paul, as he told Justin Termine and Eddie Johnson on SiriusXM NBA Radio.
Cousins isn’t alone, as many people wondered what the Warriors were doing by bringing in a guy they’ve had beef with in the past and who plays an entirely different style of basketball while also being difficult to play with.
Ultimately, this may turn out great for the Warriors, but it does seem like a lot has to happen in order for this move to be a great move for Golden State.
