Ahead of the Knicks-Warriors clash, Stephen Curry’s favorite Hall of Famer, Tara VanDerveer, dropped exciting news. The much-awaited WNBA move of the Golden State Warriors franchise. In October 2023, several reports stated that the Dubs’ owners had agreed to pay a whopping $50 million to WNBA to own a team. A few months down the line, basketball legend VanDerveer further confirmed it by expressing her excitement, minutes before tonight’s tip-off.
Featuring on the NBCS’s pregame show, the 70-year-old legend shared her thoughts about the current Dubs team. In the meantime, she also dropped an important update. VanDerveer said, “I am so so excited to have a WNBA team in the Bay Area and it will be champion too.”
The conversations about the Bay Area’s women’s team have been on the air for quite some time now. And it could never get any special to hear it again from the women’s basketball legend. The 70-year-old VerDerveer is known for her various accolades as a player and also as a coach for Stanford’s women’s team.
Notably, Stephen Curry‘s godsister Cameron Brink happened to be VerDerveer’s star player. While visiting one of her games, Steph said, “She’s (VanDerveer) a legend, an icon… So being at games, talking to her, getting to know her a little bit, she’s just a hoop head.” It really made it authenticated news for the Bay Area fans when a basketball icon of this stature dropped the WNBA update.
Apart from her, another loyal Dubs fan, George Kittle also confirmed the arrival of the women’s team earlier this year. The San Francisco 49ers star said, “Hey guys! Guess what? Golden State just got a WNBA team… it’s gonna be great right here at the Chase Center. Catch you there!” While the team’s arrival is confirmed, who is going to lead the team?
Will Tara VanDerveer fill in the head coach vacancy?
The 2002 inductee of the women’s basketball Hall of Famer has all the accolades to step up as the coach. She led the Stanford side to win three titles in her coaching career, only one of the four coaches in the sport’s history to achieve such a feat.
On the other hand, the Dubs’ HC Steve Kerr has already proven a lot with the men’s team. And speaking of him, VanDerVeer said, “Having Steve Kerr as the coach. He is a phenomenal coach. A leader. I learn a lot from him from Steve.”
So the Dub Nation could expect two magicians at work anytime soon. Do you thunk Tara VanDerveer should be the Dubs women’s team coach? Let us know in the comments.
