It was reported by Chris Haynes of NBA on TNT and Bleacher Report that veteran center JaVale McGee will sign with the Sacramento Kings. McGee is a three-time NBA champion, winning two titles with the Golden State Warriors, and another with the Los Angeles Lakers.
McGee was only a free agent for about two days, as the Dallas Mavericks cut him loose on Tuesday, and he was picked back up by Sacramento on Thursday. A solid veteran presence, McGee should give a young Sacramento team some experience as they look to graduate from first round exits to championship contenders.
It was of course Steph Curry and the Warriors who took Sacramento out in the first round this past postseason, but it was a hard fought seven game series that could have gone either way. Heroics from Curry in Game 7 were the difference maker, but the Kings feel they are much closer to contention than their first round exit would suggest.
While McGee likely will not play a lot for Sacramento, he is a solid depth piece that provides experience, leadership, and possible on-court contributions as a lob threat and rim protector. Taking a chance on somebody like this is a very low-risk move for a Kings team that could use some veteran players around their talented young core that is on the rise.
