The former general manager of the Golden State Warriors — and the architect of their four championship-winning teams since 2015 — looks set to have a new gig when the 2023/24 NBA season tips off this fall.
Bob Myers, who in May stepped down from his role with Golden State, is likely to join ESPN as an analyst on its popular “NBA Countdown” show, according to a report in the New York Post. Myers, a former player agent, was largely responsible for building the Warriors into a dynasty and will be part of ESPN’s broadcast reshuffle.
Myers part of ESPN overhaul
Myers’ arrival at ESPN will be the network’s latest addition to a largely-new on-air group.
A summer of layoffs has seen top NBA analyst Jalen Rose depart ESPN along with longtime color commentators Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy. The network has kept play-by-play announcer Mike Breen — it reportedly plans to partner him with stalwart analyst Doris Burke and former head coach Doc Rivers for the most important NBA broadcasts.
Malika Andrews will host “NBA Countdown” during the Finals, and while Myers’ precise role on the program isn’t yet known, it seems apparent he will be around the game of basketball in some capacity next season.
Myers’ sterling record of success
Myers was named the Warriors’ general manager in 2012. The franchise was considered on the rise at the time — but 10 years later, Golden State was a juggernaut, celebrating its fourt championship in seven seasons after defeating Boston in the 2022 NBA Finals.
Myers was a two-time NBA Executive of the Year during his 11-year stint with Golden State. He famously drafted Draymond Green in 2012 and refused to trade Klay Thompson the summer before the Warriors won their first championship in four decades. Myers even-more famously acquired Kevin Durant in free agency in 2016 — which produced two more championships over the next two seasons.
Myers also hired Steve Kerr to replace Jackson as head coach in 2014. Kerr has been in charge of all four Golden State title winners and remains the head coach today. He has also taken charge of the United States national team for the upcoming FIBA World Cup.
