Seven-time NBA champion, the Golden State Warriors, are looking to bring back Draymond Green, who declined his $27.6 million player option on June 19 to enter unrestricted free agency.
New general manager, Mike Dunleavy Junior, said the team wants the veteran forward back as he begins his new role after taking over from Bob Myers, who recently departed the post.
The 2022 NBA champions expected the 33-year-old to opt out; now, he can negotiate with the Warriors and explore sign and trade, as well as and free agency with other teams.
Steve Kerr recently said the Warriors are not a contender without Green, who tarnished his reputation in the team by punching Jordan Poole in October.
The altercation probably affected the team over the course of the season, where they struggled for consistency.
Dunleavy on Green’s free agency
Speaking during his introductory news conference, Dunleavy Jr. was forthright regarding Green’s future.
Green has been a key cog for the Warriors since they drafted them in 2012. Despite being an important player for Steve Kerr’s team, the forward has sometimes been termed a problematic player because of his fiery attitude.
He has had several run-ins with NBA officials and has been suspended several times for his controversial actions on the court.
Dunleavy added the team needs to be better overall.
