Ryan Garcia has taken aim at Michael Jordan over his clothing and footwear brand.
NBA legend Jordan is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all-time, playing in fifteen NBA seasons until 2003 and winning six championships with the Chicago Bulls.
The 61-year-old has used his huge profile to become a businessman off-court, launching his monumentally successful merchandise brand in partnership with Nike in 1985.
But boxing star Garcia, who recently defeated Devin Haney, has ignited a feud with Jordan over his legacy outside of the sport.
He said: “[Michael] Jordan ain’t do s*** for the people. Jordan made some shoes.
“I don’t give a f*** about no six rings, I care about what you did outside of the court.
“Anybody can [play basketball]. I could do that s*** too.”
Garcia in the video began to pretend he was taking shots at the hoop, suggesting that sport was easy for Jordan.
His criticism of the ‘six-rings’ is surprising given the magnitude of the feat that was achieved by the Bulls.
Jordan also achieved some huge personal accolades during them campaigns including six NBA Finals MVP awards and ten NBA scoring Titles, which are both all-time records.
His brand has been hugely successful, with reports indicating that his brand generated $19.5 billion from 2018 to 2023 , and he is reportedly worth $3 billion himself.
The 61-year-old has also made several charitable donations, including a $10 million direct payment to the Make-A-Wish foundation in 2023, the largest by an individual in history.
He also held an annual golf tournament from 2001 to 2014, the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational, which raised huge funds for a raft of charities.
Garcia has started a number of feuds in recent weeks both on social media and in-person, with his behaviour going viral.
The lightweight star triggered a physical altercation with Caleb Plant most recently at rival Gervonta Davis’ win over Frank Martin.
He is waiting to discover his boxing fate, after failing two drugs tests with banned substance ostarine showing.
But his team are hoping that he will be handed a reduced ban after documenting evidence that supplements he used were contaminated.
