Henry Cavill’s final DCEU showdown as Superman is realized in a new concept trailer. Cavill will no longer give life to the Man of Steel. James Gunn’s Superman movie will reboot the hero for the new DC Universe, with David Corenswet taking over as Clark Kent. That means the potential of Cavill’s lost match-up with Black Adam will go unfulfilled, though a new Superman crossover trailer shows what could have been.
Darth Trailer shared a new fan trailer of Henry Cavill’s Superman facing Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.
Cavill’s last appearance as Superman came in Black Adam’s post-credits scene, where he was set up to fight The Rock’s DC character in the future. However, due to DC’s internal changes and the end of the DCEU, that will never come to pass. Instead, the DCU’s slate of projects has a rebooted Superman and no confirmed appearance for Black Adam.
The Rock’s Superman Dream Movie Plan Explained
Black Adam And The Man Of Steel Would Have Fought
In January 2023, a detailed DC report from Variety outlined The Rock’s plans for a Black Adam and Superman crossover. Even before Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to lead the new DC Studios, there were major changes at DC. When former DC boss Walter Hamada and the head of Warner Bros. film division Toby Emmerich were about to leave the companies, Johnson met with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. The actor pitched his Black Adam/Superman crossover plans.
A series of movies would connect both characters, culminating in a major battle between Cavill’s Superman and Johnson’s Black Adam down the line.
According to the report, Johnson had ambitious plans for his future at DC. The actor wanted to spearhead a “multiyear plan for Black Adam and a Cavill-led Superman.” A series of movies would connect both characters, culminating in a major battle between Cavill’s Superman and Johnson’s Black Adam down the line. Black Adam’s post-credits scene started that setup with Cavill’s Man of Steel appearing to confront Black Adam in a brief cameo. The Rock also teased a Black Adam and Superman showdown in a way through the animated DC League of Super-Pets.
In the end, Black Adam did not have the explosive box office performance to warrant such a long-term plan. Zaslav chose to hand DC to Gunn and Safran. The duo’s plans for the DCU did not include Cavill or Johnson, with the teased Superman and Black Adam crossover being a thing of the past. At least the new fan trailer gives a look at what could have been if Henry Cavill’s Superman and The Rock’s Black Adam fought in the DCEU.
