As the Cannes Film Festival and market prepares to kick off, action veteran Jason Statham is keeping himself busy, having signed on for two new action thrillers to be directed by Jean-François Richet (Plane) and Baltasar Kormakur (Everest) respectively.
First up is Mutiny from Richet, which will begin filming in the UK in September and will be produced by Statham through his new Punch Palace Productions banner. The synopsis reads:
In Mutiny, after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered in front of him, Cole Reed is set up to take the fall for the crime— leaving him on the run as he works to uncover an international conspiracy.
“Jason Statham is one of the most kinetic action stars in the world and we look forward to teaming him up with Jean-François and the MadRiver team who we previously worked with on Plane,” said Lauren Bixby, SVP, Co-Productions and Acquisitions for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “We can’t wait to see that creative energy once again as we bring Mutiny to life.”
Statham will then follow Mutiny with an as-yet-untitled action thriller from Baltasar Kormakur, which will begin filming in November and sees Statham playing “Mason, a man who lives in isolation in a remote Scottish island. When he rescues a young girl from the ocean in a terrible storm, he sets a chain of events in motion that brings a violent attack to his hideaway, forcing him back into the world to confront the ghosts of his past.”
“The combination of Jason’s unparalleled skill in explosive action and track record in the genre, with Balt’s elevated, kinetic filmmaking style that always keeps character and story in the foreground is undeniable,” said producer John Friedberg of Black Bear. “We’re thrilled to bring this new action franchise to life with such talented partners as Balt and Jason and can’t wait to introduce the world to Michael Mason.”
Statham is coming off the David Ayer-directed The Beekeeper [read our review here] and is currently reuniting with Ayer on Levon’s Trade, which is in production now ahead of a 2025 release.
