The Beekeeper is looking to be the biggest-ever solo film for Jason Statham at the worldwide box office.
Per Collider, The Beekeeper has pulled in another $5.3 million at the domestic box office, raising its local haul to $49.4 million. WIth overseas ticket sales, the film has also garnered $73.1 million. Overall, the global gross is up to $122.5 million. The film is likely to surpass the $125.7 million haul earned by Mechanic: Resurrection to become the biggest film at the box office featuring Statham in a solo lead role.
Movies that feature Statham as part of an ensemble cast are not included in that metric, such as the his appearances in the Fast and Furious franchise. The Meg movies are also seen as films that have their own ensemble casts, albeit much smaller than something like the Fast and Furious movies. Only those films are above Mechanic: Resurrection and The Beekeeper at this time. Some of Statham’s other solo films that The Beekeeper has already surpassed include Transporter 3 at $112 million and Wrath of Man at $103 million. The original Mechanic film and the other Transporter movies fell short of the $100 million mark.
The Beekeeper Sets a New Record for Director David Ayer
This also comes after The Beekeeper garnered another positive record for its director, David Ayer. The film debuted with an audience score of 92%, which is the higest audience score of any movie directed by Ayer on Rotten Tomatoes. Its critical reviews were more mixed, but the majority of filmgoers appear to be having fun with The Beekeeper. That enjoyment, coupled with the box office success of the film, may wind up having Jason Statham come back for an eventual sequel.
In The Beekeeper, per the official synopsis, “One man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as ‘Beekeepers.'” Directed by David Ayer and written by Kurt Wimmer, the film stars Jason Statham, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons.
Statham has also appeared in several action movies over the past year. That includes a role in Expend4bles, though that wasn’t quite as well-received, resulting in a Razzie nomination for the actor. In 2023, he also appeared in the films Fast X, Meg 2: The Trench, and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.
