Even though Steph Curry is the point guard of the Golden State Warriors, Isiah Thomas, one of the greatest point guards of all time, doesn’t quite consider Steph one.
It’s a very interesting perspective by the NBA Hall of Famer.
On an episode of the Draymond Green Show, Isiah Thomas revealed why he doesn’t count Steph Curry as the point guard of the Warriors when discussing the greatest point guards of all time.
“On the Golden State Warriors, you are the point guard,” Thomas said to Draymond Green. “You have more assists than Steph. You bring the ball up. You initiate the offense. You set the defense. You run the show. Steph comes off the screens, he catches, and he shoots, and he’s one of the greatest shooters ever.”
In Thomas’ eyes, Draymond Green is the true point guard of the Warriors. Not only that, but the way Steph models his game is based on shooting guards, rather than point guards. For those facts alone, Thomas doesn’t view Steph as a point guard.
“I won a different way,” Thomas said. “As a point guard, I led my team, and I may be the only one who’s done this, as a point guard, I’ve led my team in scoring and assists to back-to-back championships. When I look at Steph, when he talks about the people that he’s emulated, he talks about Reggie Miller. He talks about Ray Allen.”
While there are some truths to what Isiah Thomas is saying, Steph Curry is a point guard. Not only is Steph Curry a point guard, but he should be regarded as one of the best of all time.
