The 2016 NBA Finals will forever be remembered in basketball history. Reigning champions for the most wins in a regular season, the Golden State Warriors, were up against the Cleveland Cavaliers, led by LeBron James, determined to bring a championship to his city. The series was deadlocked at 3-3, setting the stage for an exhilarating Game 7 that would determine the ultimate winner.
NBA ESPN analyst, Doris Burke in an interview, recently recounted the intensity of these games and the teams’ remarkable efforts.
The historic 2016 NBA Finals between Golden State and the Cavaliers
The finals were an unforgettable series between two of the league’s most impressive teams. It was a rollercoaster ride, with each game bringing its surprises and twists. The series began with a bang as the Warriors claimed the first two games on their home court. However, the Cavaliers fought back winning Game 3 and Game 5 on their home ground.
With each team winning three games, it all came down to a decisive Game 7. Doris Burke recounted the excitement about the game, “I remember being in the hurdle and game 7 is just pleading for more from LeBron James, and I am like how much do you expect LeBron James to give you dude like he gave you everything”.
The Cavaliers were on a mission to bring the championship home for the first time. James, who had already given his all in the previous games, was expected to deliver again. And deliver he did, leading the Cavaliers to a historic championship.
Doris Burke getting choked on live tv over 4x MVP’s Triumph
As Burke watched the series unfold, she rooted for both teams. She admired the Warriors, but she also had a deep respect for LeBron James and his relentless pursuit of victory. And soon after James won, Burke choked up a little while interviewing him. She wasn’t rooting against the Warriors, but James’s dedication and passion moved her to the game.
In her own words, “At this stage in my career, I am literally old enough to be their mother, you know Steph and LeBron. I start to choke up, not because I was rooting against the Golden State. I mean, they couldn’t have a bigger fan of Steph Curry than me, Klay Thompson, and these guys what they do”.
She continued, “I am watching this guy (LeBron) and getting choked up because he has poured his heart and soul into this. What a great memory for me.”
As Burke reflects on those moments, it’s clear the players’ achievements touch so many lives; even those of media veterans like herself who’ve covered the sport for decades. Let us know your favorite memories from the epic finals in the comments!
