BALTIMORE COUNTY – Four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP Stephen Curry is headed to University of Maryland Baltimore County’s (UMBC) Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena for a showcase on Thursday, Aug. 17.
Under Armor announced that Curry will host a 90-minute event promising a blend of sportsmanship, entertainment, and a celebration of basketball. This appearance by Curry, a leading figure for Under Armour, closely follows the company’s recent announcement about introducing new products inspired by their elite athletes.
Tickets for this special event were snapped up as of Aug. 9, but fans can still revel in Curry’s ongoing relationship with the local school.
Curry generously gifted the UMBC Retrievers exclusive pairs of his signature sneaker, the Curry 5’s, after their historic upset in the 2018 NCAA tournament.
The Retrievers made headlines by becoming the first 16-seed team to triumph over a 1-seed in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. UMBC’s underdog mentality clearly resonated with Curry, who reached the Elite Eight with his 10th-seeded Davidson squad in 2008.
In 2019, Curry returned to UMBC to sing autographs and generously donate books penned by two Baltimore authors.
A tweet from the university showcased a moment from Curry’s visit, featuring him alongside Ryan Odom, the men’s basketball team coach. The post encapsulated Curry’s relationship with UMBC perfectly: “Always great when our most famous fan visits campus.”
