The Golden State Warriors are in an incredibly sensitive moment of needing to make a trade, but needing to sacrifice someone important to do it. Steph Curry knows it’s necessary, but can’t publicly state who needs to go or stay.
After the Warriors lost to the Atlanta Hawks in a crushing overtime defeat, Curry opened up about the Warriors’ trade deadline plans and kept it very political.
“It’s up to us as players to perform, play at the level we’re supposed to so that those conversations and decisions are maybe a little easier,” Curry said. “Obviously, I’m not a GM, I’m not in that position where I’m getting asked that every single day. My job is to go out there, perform. The closer you get to [the trade deadline]; it’s the nature of the NBA, you can’t be naïve and act like calls aren’t being made or whatever it is.”
The most telling statement in what Curry said is that he knows not to be naive. It’s a perspective only a veteran could have and is something that’s likely being said to the younger talent on the team. The most professional thing a player can do is just perform despite all the murmurs.
“For us as players in the locker room, you have to be able to control what you can control,” Curry said. “Until it’s said otherwise, or decisions are made, it’s up to us to go out and perform, and hold our ground as a legitimate team that can win. And if you’re not, you approach things differently when the opportunity presents itself.”
It’s very clear that the Warriors need to build a better roster around Steph Curry. While he can’t specifically say publicly which players need to be traded, it’s unacceptable that no one was able to put up at least 20 points in an overtime game where he scored 60 points. That type of load is unfair to Steph Curry, and hopefully, the Warriors organization will do something to fix it.
