At one of the Rico Hines UCLA runs this summer, LA Clippers guard Russell Westbrook was one of the many NBA stars in attendance. Also in attendance for this run was Golden State Warriors big man Kevon Looney. Speaking to all of the players at the run, Westbrook shouted out Looney, saying, “He’s been in the league a long time for a reason. Not because he’s super athletic… He do his job, man. Every night.”
This was high praise from Westbrook, who clearly has a lot of respect for what Looney has been able to do at the NBA level throughout his career. A three-time NBA champion, Looney has been integral to Golden State’s dynasty. Often flying under the radar, Looney does not get the recognition of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, but every single one of those players would say there’s no dynasty without his contributions since arriving in 2015.
An eight-year veteran, Looney has spent his entire career with the Warriors, and ranks 6th in franchise history in postseason rebounds, and 2nd in franchise history in postseason offensive rebounds. Truly dominant on the glass, Looney has won Golden State playoff games with his rebounding. Contributions like this can often go unnoticed, but those who follow the Warriors closely know how impactful their veteran big man is every single night.
