Steph Curry gets shoutout from Drake, loud cheers from Brooklyn crowd

Steph Curry’s victory weekend continued into Monday when he got an in-person shoutout from one of the biggest artists in the world: Drake.

After winning a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe this weekend, becoming the second active athlete ever to win the competition, the Golden State Warriors star attended a sold-out Drake show in Brooklyn on Monday.

A viral clip from the concert showed the camera panning to Curry in between songs. It’s a testament to Curry’s celebrity — or perhaps the insignificance of the Brooklyn Nets — that, in spite of dominating Brooklyn’s NBA team almost every time he plays against them, he received loud cheers at Barclays Center.

Of course, it also probably helps when it’s a Drake show and the rapper calls Curry “my brother.”

“They say we look alike; you can really see it,” the rapper joked.

Curry scratched his chin, possibly to indicate the difference in facial hair between him and Drake, before the rapper asked the Brooklyn crowd to make some noise for the Warriors player and his wife Ayesha.

Steph and Ayesha are tied to the Toronto rapper because of Drake’s song “0 to 100 / The Catch Up”, which features the line “Been cookin’ with the sauce, Chef Curry with the pot.” It’s worth noting that the song — and line — came out in 2013 before the Dubs’ first title in the Curry era, so it wasn’t entirely a bandwagoner’s shoutout. (The “6 God” also has a smattering of references to the Warriors in his discography.)

The Currys later posted a video of themselves performing a remix of that song in their kitchen.

Drake exchanged some trash talk with the Warriors during the 2019 NBA Finals, when they were playing his hometown Toronto Raptors, but there are clearly no hard feelings left over from that series — it probably helps that the rapper has a tattoo dedicated to Curry. Whether this latest interaction means another remix from the Currys of a Drake song is coming remains to be seen.
