The NBA’s first ever in-season tournament is right around the corner, and Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry was asked which team he sees being the Wild Card in the Western Conference, and said the Lakers. For those unfamiliar with the in-season tournament format, this does not mean Curry was choosing LA to finish over Golden State, but instead choosing them to be the Western Conference’s Wild Card.
Each conference will have a Wild Card team, which is the team that finishes with the best record in group play amongst the teams that did not win their group. For Curry, he sees this being the Lakers.
This answer has been surprising to both Lakers believers and skeptics. For the believers, they of course feel Los Angeles will win their group, leaving no need for a Wild Card spot. For the skeptics, they of course feel the Lakers won’t make it out of group play at all.
Since nobody has seen the in-season tournament before, it’s hard to predict what will happen, but it should be a fun change from the usual regular season games. With the tournament just around the corner, the wait is almost over to see what the NBA’s new idea will look like in action.
For now, Warriors star Steph Curry likes the Lakers as a Wild Card team.
