Peacock has finally shared details about its upcoming comedy series “Mr. Throwback,” which stars Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry.
The show features the NBA star portraying himself alongside a cast that includes comedian/actor Adam Pally (“The Mindy Project”) and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Ego Nwodim, Peacock told the Chronicle.
Produced by Curry’s company, Unanimous Media, the show promises to explore themes of redemption and nostalgia in a mockumentary style similar to the streamer’s hits like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.”
Here’s everything we know about it so far.
What is ‘Mr. Throwback’ about?
The show follows the story of a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer (Pally), who seeks redemption by reconnecting with his sixth-grade teammate played by Curry.
Who are the key players and creators?
“Mr. Throwback” was created by David Caspe, known for his work on “Happy Endings” and “Black Monday,” along with brothers Matthew and Daniel Libman, who also worked on “Happy Endings” and “Champaign ILL.”
In addition to starring in the series, Curry and Pally serve as executive producers, alongside Erick Peyton, chief creative officer of Unanimous Media. Comedian David Wain, who directs the first six episodes, joins them as an executive producer.
Which production companies are involved?
“Mr. Throwback” is produced by Curry’s Unanimous Media and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Where and when did filming take place?
Filming for the show began on May 9 in Chicago and the Illinois suburb of Evanston, spanning through late June, according to Screen, a film industry magazine. However, Peacock did not confirm the filming locations and other reports have suggested the mockumentary might also be set in the Bay Area.
When will the series premiere?
A premiere date is yet to be announced. Those details and a trailer from Peacock are expected soon.
Is this Curry’s first foray into television production?
No. Unanimous Media has previously produced the ABC game show “Holey Moley,” the animated Netflix revival of the sitcom “Good Times” and the Academy Award-winning short documentary “The Queen of Basketball,” which celebrates the life of former women’s basketball star Lusia Harris.
