There was a brief moment during last year’s off-season when it seemed like Kevin Durant could rejoin the Golden State Warriors. Even though Steph Curry teased it, Durant ultimately joined the Phoenix Suns. Now, Curry revealed just how realistic those chances actually were.
Curry conducted an interview on The Ringer’s “Real Ones” podcast where he revealed the untold details about Durant returning to the Warriors.
“I think there was an excitement or curiosity of, ‘Is this really a legit possibility?’ ” Curry said. “And to be honest, I had talked to him maybe once or twice about it specifically, but he wasn’t in the decision-making process so he wasn’t in a position to where he could be like, ‘I want to do X, Y, Z.’ It was just more of a natural conversation.”
While there was interest between Kevin Durant and Steph Curry, it doesn’t seem like the situation really evolved past that. He couldn’t force his way to the Warriors or anything like that, but Durant was definitely open to returning.
“And it just spoke to what I just mentioned. Yeah, we know our games gel, we know how to play basketball, so if it ended up being that, of course I’d love to play with him,” Curry said. “But it never really got past that. So, again, he wasn’t really in the situation where, he could demand the trade, but he couldn’t really control the outcome of it. So I didn’t really spend too much time after the initial shock of like, ‘Oh he wants out of Brooklyn?'”
It would have been very fascinating to see Kevin Durant rejoin Steph Curry on the Golden State Warriors. While the Warriors would have been championship favorites, it’s nice to see Steph Curry actually getting the credit he deserves now that he doesn’t have Durant as a running mate.
