The Golden State Warriors suffered their second blowout loss in a row. They lost to the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday (Jan. 10.) That defeat marked the Warrior’s 20th loss of the season and was once again an indicator that, as currently constructed, this version of the roster will struggle to reach their goal of challenging an NBA Championship.
During his post-game press conference, Steph Curry was asked about the impending trade deadline, which is scheduled for February 8 this season, and whether the Warriors roster is on the clock to show some improvement. He replied by noting how their current standard needs to be changed.
“We have a standard that’s pretty evident that if things stay the same, that’s the definition of insanity, right? Keep doing the same thing, expecting a different result. As players, and what we can do, we have to control our focus, our competitiveness. Controlling things that we can on the court. Like every NBA season, every organization, this stuff works itself out. You can’t allow yourself to get distracted by that…Until anything happens, you can’t get caught up in it.”
The Warriors front office has continued to walk two timelines with the roster. On one side, you have the veteran core of Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. On the other, you have the young guys, led by Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski.
Golden State may need to choose which timeline they want to build around, as that would give them the most flexibility in the trade market. However, that’s a decision for the summer. It will be interesting to see whether Mike Dunleavy Jr. makes a trade or chooses to stand pat and let things work themselves out.
