Yesterday, the Golden State Warriors made history as they announced they would be bringing a WNBA expansion franchise team to the Bay Area starting in 2025. If there’s one person on the team who’s incredibly excited about it, it’s Steph Curry.
Curry has been a long-time proponent of women’s sports and was glowing with excitement when asked about the announcement by the media.
“It’s awesome,” Curry said. “I remember being in Charlotte back in the day when the Sting showed up for the first time. The energy around the city was awesome. Knowing the journey of the WNBA and the opportunity for expansion and the fact that you have a team here in the Bay is going to be fun. Obviously, paying attention to the finals for a couple days, there’s no better time for growing women’s basketball, women’s sports in general, the investment in the game. It’s exciting, I know there’s a lot to figure out and be announced – team name, schedule, all that before summer 2025. Just the fact it’s growing, it’s expanding, is here, is awesome.”
There’s still some time before the WNBA comes to the Bay Area, but it’s going to come sooner than anyone thinks. There are only two years left until 2025 and the team is a complete blank slate – no name, logo, or anything. Still, more sports coming to the Bay Area will always be a good thing.
