Being one of the most influential power couples in the NBA, Stephen and Ayesha Curry have constantly invested their time and resources to make lives easier for the underprivileged. To facilitate their goal, they also founded the Eat.Learn.Play. Foundation five years ago, which has helped provide quality reading resources, nutritious meals and opportunities to play for thousands of kids in Oakland. However, someone seems to have an issue with Steph and Ayesha’s efforts as one of their funded facilities was vandalized earlier this week.
In a disgraceful act, a garden that was added to the playground of Oakland’s Global Family Elementary School two years ago after receiving partial funds from Steph and Ayesha’s foundation was severely damaged by vandals. As per the Oakland Unified School District, the vandals “tore apart the planters, ripped out the irrigation system, broke all the wooden benches, damaged a ladder, and left everything in the area in disarray.” Leaving the place in need of some major rework.
Adding unnecessary expense for the school and damaging a place that students loved to spend their time in, the act seems to have no evident purpose other than ruining school property. “It’s unfortunate that anyone would think that causing this kind of damage anywhere would be fun, funny, or a good idea.” OUSD added. While the local department are trying to catch the vandals that committed the act, Steph and Ayesha, who helped build the property have not made their opinion public about the whole ordeal. Maybe their silence is because they are also stumped wondering why someone would damage a property that was made to help underprivileged children.
Steph and Ayesha Curry’s impact on the community
Although the recent vandalism act does come as a minor roadblock for the couple, it is unlikely to stop their efforts of helping the people of Oakland excel. With their foundation, the Currys have set a goal of providing over six million school meals annually to nearly 35,000 students across 85 institutions. For that, they have even partnered with organizations like No Kid Hungry, Community Kitchens and more.
Meanwhile, there are also ongoing plans of developing multiple school yards and providing them with the best sporting facilities to help the students reach their maximum potential. Partnering with sports giants like Under Armour, Oakland Athletic League, and more, Steph and Ayesha are constantly working toward making the schools of Oakland a better place for kids to learn and develop.
“It’s the fact that these are three very simple things in life that every child should have access to, and so when you’re not afforded these things, it’s like, how can I even dream?” Ayesha Curry said about how the idea of starting their foundation began. Meanwhile, Steph said in an interview last year, “These kids deserve an opportunity to achieve their full potential, especially those from the Black and Brown communities.” And maybe Steph and Ayesha will soon voice their thoughts about the recent vandalism once they process the whole situation.
