The biggest crossover the sport community has ever seen is here! Stephen Curry, one of the greatest NBA players of all time, just dropped some major hints at his next venture. This follows his previous shoutout last week to eight gamers who were headed to the Fortnite Champion Series – Global Championship 2023.
Fans of eSports and NBA have been speculating the entire week about what this surprise link up could mean. Now they have another piece to help solve this puzzle.
What’s Chef Curry cooking?
Having established himself as one of the greats in basketball, it looks like Steph is on to conquer some other side quests. The Golden State Warriors guard posted a cryptic message on his X handle with a caption, “Are you ready to Run the Ring?”.
Some speculate that this could potentially mean a collaboration between him and the eSports organization, Team SoloMid. And this is not the first time he’s dabbled with the gaming world.
Steph is a well-known gamer and has also been featured in NBA 2K and even released his own mobile game, Chef Curry. And his partnership with TSM goes back all the way to 2018.
Stephen Curry, the investor
In July 2018, Curry invested $37 million, via his venture capital firm, SC30 Inc. in TSM as part of a Series A funding round. It was part of a larger group of investors that included Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, Curry’s Golden State Warriors teammate Andre Iguodala, and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young.
And this was not the first time we see basketball players donning the hats of investors though. There was Kevin Durant and LeBron James who invested in Major League Pickleball. LeBron holds a stake in the English Premier League soccer club, Liverpool FC. In baseball we have Magic Johnson who is a co-owner of the LA Dodgers baseball team. And in 2021, Giannis Antetokounmpo bought a stake in the Milwaukee Brewers. Within eSports itself, there are multiple NBA players including Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant.
Branching out one’s financial reservoirs is crucial. Especially for sportsmen whose longevity is not always assured. With injuries playing as huge risk factors, it’s common sense to expand and Steph seems to be doing just that. What will be his next conquest? Let’s wait and watch.
