Steve Kerr, head coach of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, has become a shareholder of Spanish top division football club Real Mallorca.
The 57-year-old, who has led the Warriors to four NBA titles and also coaches the U.S. national team, visited the island last summer to watch a game and has been welcomed on board by former Phoenix Suns vice-president Andy Kohlberg, who became Real Mallorca president and majority shareholder after a restructure this summer.
Kerr joins two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash, who is also a Real Mallorca shareholder.
The La Liga club announced in June that Kohlberg would lead a group of shareholders in taking majority control of the club after acquiring the shares of Robert Sarver, former owner of the Phoenix Suns, and other investors.
Kerr, who will lead Team USA in the upcoming FIBA World Cup, said of Real Mallorca: “I’m a friend of Andy Kohlberg and we were talking this summer. He told me about the change in ownership, and offered me the chance to be part of the new investment group.
“I’m really looking forward to it, I was in Mallorca last summer to watch a match, supporting the team and becoming a fan. It’s a very exciting opportunity.”
Kohlberg said of Kerr: “It’s a huge step forward — when he was here a year ago and spoke to the players, he made a big impact and I loved hearing the message about the importance of being a team and the involvement of each member, on the pitch and on the bench, in order to always be ready. The players loved it and Steve enjoyed it, too.”
Real Mallorca — currently 15th in the La Liga table — are next in action on the road against Granada on Saturday.
