Six sneakers, worn by Michael Jordan as he led the Chicago Bulls to six championships, will soon be put up for auction.
Sotheby’s has called it “The Dynasty Collection,” and it includes one Air Jordan sneaker that the legendary shooting guard wore in each of the NBA Finals clinching games during the twin three-peats of the ’90s.
The collection grew out of a tradition Jordan started after the Bulls beat the Lakers for their first title in 1991, when No. 23 gave longtime team executive Tim Hallam one of his shoes as a keepsake.
Being more than a little superstitious, Jordan continued the practice after each of the Bulls next five championship wins.
Included in the collection will be a set of signed, one-of-one photographs taken by Bill Smith. The photos, taken after the 1992, 1993, 1996 and 1998 NBA Finals, show a smiling Jordan celebrating the victory — with only one sneaker on his foot. The other had already been given to Hallam.
A private, American collector later obtained the set of sneakers from Hallam.
Sotheby’s predicted that the collection of Nike Air Jordans could fetch a price as high as $10 million.
The auction will take place in February 2024.
