20 years ago (2004)

(Photo) Clayton Houff said it started when NBA greats Michael Jordan, Charles Oakley and Super Bowl MVP Richard Dent walked into the Pines pro shop. He’s the manager, and Jordan walks up, shakes hands and says, “Hey Clayton, I’m Michael.” After the three played golf, Jordan invited Houff to be a guest at his box at the BIR Superbike races.

30 years ago (1994)

The Brainerd Bears celebrated their second straight come-from-behind victory as they flattened the Regina Cyclones 8-4 at Mills Field here. Regina was up 3-1 when the Bears exploded for six runs in the sixth inning. Dennis “Speedboat” Jones took the win in relief. The Bears (11-8) lead the Eastern Division.

40 years ago (1984)

(Photo) Mark Olberding, the 6-9 forward for the Kansas City Kings of the NBA, didn’t have to travel far to be a celebrity in this year’s Camp Confidence Celebrity Golf Tournament. He and wife Joan bought a summer place on Gull Lake, and Mark plays in the Men’s Twilight League on Thursdays.

60 years ago (1964)

It seemed Fred Larson was in trouble in every inning, but he still prevailed in a 2-0 American Legion win over Detroit Lakes. That pushed the Brainerd season record to 13-3. Larson pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth and had two runners on in three other innings. He struck out nine Lakers.

80 years ago (1944)

The county commissioners passed a resolution approving the State Tax Commission deeding over portions of four sections of land to the city of Brainerd for an airport five miles northeast of here. The county reserves the right to take over half the airport at a future date if the county wants an airport.

100 years ago (1924)

Except for Hennepin, Ramsey and St. Louis counties, Crow Wing issued more hunting licenses last year – 2,425 – than any county in Minnesota. But only 560 have filed the required report on number of birds and animals taken. Those failing to report may be refused a license for this year.
