Steph Curry almost swapped the west coast for the east in a dramatic trade to the Boston Celtics as per Bob Myers.
The ex-Golden State Warriors general manager very quickly laughed the idea out of his office as he aimed to retain the legendary three-pointer shooter.
The offer came in from Myers’ mentor, who was serving as the general manager of the Celtics back then, as he discussed how many offers he has received for Curry’s services throughout he years.
“Look I was never upset with anybody asking,” Myers said to ESPN’s Woj Podcast. “A GM’s job is to mine for trades, that’s a GM’s job.
“But [Danny] Ainge was the one always asking. I owe my career to Ainge so I [couldn’t] be upset, ‘return the favor, give me Curry’ (laughs). Everybody knew that was not happening so, it was a good laugh.”
Ainge had a reputation for making blockbuster trades happen such as acquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen from the Minnesota Timberwolves, and they became NBA Champions the following year.
Ainge also gave Myers his big break in the administrative offices, setting the ball rolling for a relationship and career that saw Myers voted NBA Executive of the Year twice as the Warriors went on the claim a total of four rings.
After leaving the Warriors in the summer of 2023, Myers now serves as an analyst on ESPN and as an advisor to the Washington Commanders in the NFL.
