An end to the debate of Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James remains elusive. Despite the remarkable prowess displayed by both icons in their respective eras, fans cannot stop pitting them against each other. While that conversation may never end, a former NBA player recently shared a new way to approach the legacy of basketball greats.
In his recent appearance in ‘The Raz Report,’ the 2X NBA All-Star and analyst Baron Davis was asked by one of his listeners about the greatest between Jordan and James.
Baron Davis urges fans to appreciate the legacy of basketball’s legends
Most NBA related podcasts and conversations eventually have to address the elephant in the room. It was no different for the Baron Davis. He was asked by a fan to pick between The Black Cat and The Chosen One. Like most people, this put Davis deep into thought. He then emphasized how both MJ and James’ legacy should be recognized.
While bestowing the title of NBA great upon both the legends, The Baron appreciated the unique contributions and enduring impact of both basketball icons. Conveying his thoughts, the Golden State Warriors legend explained, “If you want an answer, it’s not either or, it’s both. And it’s an appreciation for them as being artists.”
“And so you have to appreciate their art, their artistry, their creativeness, right, and their accomplishments….But you cannot compare it because they did not- these artists did not live in the same space, or create in the same space at the same time,” added Baron Davis.
While most answers to this question tend to revolve around accolades and accomplishments and numbers, Baron Davis breathed fresh air into the conversation. His approach of viewing their careers as bodies of work makes it clear that their specific eras and competitors and cultures played a huge role in shaping their legacy. And while comparing Jordan to James will likely never stop, hopefully, like Davis suggested, we can all be more appreciative of the greatness we got to witness.
The unique greatness of Michael Jordan and LeBron James
Analyzing their individual performances, Jordan’s scoring prowess is undeniable, while James shines in rebounding and playmaking. The Chicago Bulls legend’s three steals titles showcase his defensive excellence, an aspect which the Los Angeles Lakers star has not been able to claim a comparable accolade.
Of course, this also reflects in the Defensive Player of the Year award, which is the only accolade missing from LeBron James’ trophy cabinet. Furthermore, the debate between the two players usually also includes their positions and playing styles. Acknowledging the different eras in which they played adds another argument to the comparison. Major statistical analysis alone may not do justice to the distinct playing styles and challenges each faced during their careers. It’s also their contribution to culture.
What MJ did for the NBA is unprecedented and can never be repeated because of the level the league is already at. However, what James is doing with his reach now is also truly exceptional. His charitable work and entrepreneurial drive are only likely to increase whenever he retires. Considering that LeBron is still a top player at 39, it’s hard to tell how his career will look when it’s all said and done.
