Every move Klay Thompson has made so far is hinting that he might be leaving the Warriors this summer. Likely to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this month, Klay surprisingly unfollowed the Warriors on social media while also following stars like Paolo Banchero and Austin Reaves, both of whose teams have been rumored to be Klay’s next stop. Watching his Splash Brother slowly slip away from his side, Stephen Curry might have resorted to a different tactic to keep Klay in the Bay Area.
During an episode of the Heat Check Podcast that released on June 13, Steph opened up about his amazing journey in Golden State in a conversation with his father Dell Curry. Moreover, amid Klay’s uncertain future, Steph reminisced about how the core trio of him, Draymond and Klay helped build the Warriors culture and dynasty, “The way that we got to do it, that’s a big part of our success, so that’s how you, you know, how you develop culture, and we’re still trying to do it, like, there’s different iterations of it, what, almost 10 years in, 11 years in since our core three got together back in 2012. It’s crazy.”
More importantly, not only has the trio watched each other’s success on the court, but they have also been a huge part of each other’s personal life. “Because we play so long, we’ve seen so many different versions of our group in the sense of even like we all have families now, most of us have kids… it’s just wild to know, you know, how special this bond has been and what we’ve created.” Almost sharing a brother like relation with Klay and Draymond for over a decade, they are definitely a lot more than just teammates. And maybe, Steph is taking an emotional approach to remind his Splash Brother of the times they spent together and the castle they have built, which might lure him to stay with the Warriors a little longer.
The Warriors want Klay to stay
Because of how much Klay has achieved in the Warriors uniform and the recognition he has brought to the franchise, they do not want to break up the band just yet. With that, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon revealed that the Warriors have made a two-year offer to the sharpshooter before he finalizes his free agency decision in the coming week. Although the amount of the contract has not been disclosed, it is likely that Klay might not take the offer because he has rejected a similar offer by the team once in the past.
Just last year, he was reportedly offered a $48 million deal for the same number of years which he did not seem too interested in. Meanwhile, there have been reports that Klay wants a three-year deal instead, which he might be able to bag with the Magic or any other suitor in free agency. With the money and the length of the contract not being what Klay desires, the only thing that might keep him from leaving the Warriors could be the brotherhood with Steph and Draymond. Do you agree?
