It’s fun to watch Jason throw a punch and air scream in pain. Breaking into movies with 1998’s ‘Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels,’ over the course of 2 decades; Jason went on to have a glorious career as a jaw-breaking, bone-crushing, true action hero. The vast expanse of his career encompasses being a transporter, a hitman, a con man, a veteran amongst tons of more badass roles. If there was something that brought his action the original O-that-hurt touch, it has to be his training, skills, and a set of dogmatic beliefs.
For an action hero who does jumping, flying, and breaking an uncountable number of times, it is important for the moves to come to the surface naturally. Especially on occasions involving an actor who is put off by the thought of stunt doubles. And that is exactly so with Jason. Having been performing action scenes himself, Jason believes the action that comes out of the stuntman should be embarrassing for actors. After all, those savage fights were fought by someone else.
That brings us to why Marvel Universe doesn’t interest the death-defying superstar. In part, it’s due to the same reason. “I could take my grandma and put her in a cape, and they’ll put her on a green screen, and they’ll have stunt doubles come in and do all the action. Anybody can do it. I’m inspired by old, real-star — guys that can really do their thing,” Jason told in an interview with an Italian Website / 400 Calci. Simply put, reliance on stunt doubles can be likened to a very serious ‘no’ from Mr. Jason.
The credit of Jason’s innate athleticism can be equally shared between his determination and his father who was a boxer and gymnast. “He taught me to do a handstand practically before I could walk. I could do somersaults and backflips from a very early age,” Jason told about his father. That also paved a straight path for him to diving, selection in the national team, and so on in a similar category. Statham is a professional diver, having competed for England in his early days. Additionally, Jason has tried several gigs to earn a living, not much known is his job as the seller of cheap jewelry on the corner streets of London.
Statham takes pride in what he does and on a serious note, it doesn’t come without a price. While shooting for The Expendables 3, Statham narrowly escaped death in a horrific accident. He was driving a 3-ton truck, the brakes went off and the truck got off the cliff to take a plunge into the Black Sea. Thanks to his incredible diving skills, he swam out of both the truck and sea. About the incident, his co-star in the movie, Sylvester Stallone said, “if it was anyone else, he’d be dead.” It was an experience that Statham describes as ‘the closest to drowning to death.’
Over time Jason stepped up his gameplay, improvising the hand-to-hand fights with a lot of heavy machinery usage. Arguably, Hollywood is not an encouraging ground for punches and kicks, since always the action heroes have been reliant on big machine guns, rifles, and grenades, etc. The Terminator, Stallone’s Rambo, and Schwarzenegger’s Predator are just a few of them. As long as the brute Jason Statham is concerned, it’s all majorly about street-fight kind of battle. Lately, there has been a surge in his use of weapons though still, nothing can compare Jason’s fierce use of fist of fury.
The natural procession of an action sequence involving Jason is so good to watch that one almost feels Jason being an anti-hero. Well, he is typecast as an antihero rather often, do not forget the fight he put up as Deckard Shaw. His roles are extremely brutal as the protagonist, but funnily enough, he’s equally insidious as the all-evil bad guy.
Jason’s iconic prison fight with The Rock in Fate of the Furious gathered almost everybody’s attention. The alpha male gave an equal fight to the pro of the game. As simple as that, in order to stand head to head with The Rock, one needs to know all possible knacks of fighting, and Jason had them all flaunted throughout the scene. Not to forget, he keeps his skills as a Martial Artist sharp, practicing regularly for hours. Statham has a great knowledge of various fighting disciplines like judo, boxing, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
All in all, everything Jason did throughout his life has had an integral role to play in solidifying him as the steel-strong action hero. Selling goods on streets imparted a few important acting skills, and his interest in combat sports prepared him for larger than life action sequences.
