There’s no denying that Team USA has stacked its roster with superstars. It includes generational talents like LeBron James, Stephen Curry & Kevin Durant, along with superstars from the current generation. Notably, it left the hoops fans with one important question: Who will make it to the starting five? While the Fox Sports veteran Chris Broussard attempted to crack a unique lineup, his partner, Rob Parker, shut him down, dismantling Steph’s greatest PG claim amid the latest update from the practice camp.
Broussard, putting on his thinking cap, listed Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum/Anthony Davis, Stephen Curry, and LeBron James. Importantly, the media veteran uncannily placed King James in the point guard position. And he also had a reason behind it. Chris added, “LeBron could be in that Draymond Green role cause, you know when Golden State plays, Draymond is kind of like the point guard, and LeBron could play that role obviously even better than Draymond and you got the shooters in Steph, KD, Tatum, and Embiid,” considering Steve Kerr’s presence as the coach.
Broussard didn’t stop there. He turned his attention towards the seemingly unimpressed Rob Parker and asked how he liked the idea. Parker instantly dialed back the clock to the point where Steph claimed to be the ‘Best Point Guard’ in the Gil’s Arena show. Keeping that in mind, he said, “It’s a huge indictment of this whole talk that Steph Curry is the second-best point guard of all time.”
Parker went on to back his argument saying, “There’s no way if he (Steph) was really considered that would anybody be handling the ball other than him if he’s on this team.” He further dragged in Magic Johnson, who was the prime subject in the best PG debate.
He added, “Ain’t No Way know how Magic Johnson would have been on the team and LeBron James is handling the ball or Isaiah Thomas or John Stockton or even Chris Paul.” Following that, all hell broke loose as Parker went after Steph. He said, “He’s the second best point guard ever is a sham, is a ruse, fugazi.“
“Steph Curry is not the second-greatest point guard of all time. If he was the second greatest point guard of all time, no matter if LeBron was on the team, he would be handling the basketball he would be running the off offense, but it ain’t the case Steph is a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” Rob Parker concluded. Well, that was assertively put forward by the co-host, but keep your thoughts running for now, and let’s get a third opinion from the man within the bracket itself.
Who is the greatest PG according to Magic Johnson?
Firstly, let’s clear the air. LeBron James has built a reputation around his ability to be versatile on the court. So, it isn’t a difficult task for James to take up the PG role and run the play on the side. Especially in the latter part of his career, after he had become less agile compared to his prime, James shifted his play style to a more cerebral approach. And, LeBron coming off the bench is out of the question, as a report from The Athletic’s Joe Vardon cleared that the Laker is likely to start the game at the point forward position.
Nevertheless, moving on to the topic of the discussion. First of all, there isn’t any official definition of the PG role. But, in a traditional sense, the PG is someone who orchestrates the game and dishes out passes to score buckets. Stephen Curry certainly isn’t that. But, he made a name for himself in that position with his shooting ability, winning four rings, a Finals MVP, and a league MVP with that skill.
During his appearance on the CBS Sports Radio Interview, he said, “If he got more than five championships, if he got more than three Finals MVPs and three league MVPs, then he’s the greatest. If he got more than No. 1 in assists all-time in the Finals, No. 2 in double-doubles [in the playoffs and Finals], No. 1 in triple-doubles all-time in the NBA playoffs, No. 4 in steals all-time in the playoffs, if he got more than those numbers, then he’s the best.”
The legend basically listed out his accolades to claim that his the greatest PG of all time and slap every critic out there.
